Picture by Akintunde Akinleye for the exhibition “The Spiritual Highway: Religious World Making in Megacity Lagos”, in collaboration with Dr. Marloes Janson, March 2016, University of LeidenThe French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA) Nigeria (Ibadan), Sciences Po (Paris) and Columbia University (New York) invite applications for 18 young researchers on our first jointly taught research masterclass, to be held at the University of Ibadan, from June 19 to June 23, 2017.

The masterclass is aimed at PhD students in Social Sciences and Humanities at the beginning of their doctoral studies (1st or 2nd year), who have not yet finished conducting their fieldwork, and also at students finishing a research master’s degree and planning to continue with doctoral studies.

This masterclass will train cohorts of students in intellectual questions, methods, and writing strategies relevant for their future careers. Students will engage in reading seminars and firsthand research with the goal of writing a short analysis, which will be published online. This masterclass focusses on methodology, the topic is not restricted to one urban area, one region or one religion in Nigeria. All students interested in questions of religion and urbanism are encouraged to apply.

Masterclass Theme

The masterclass focusses on the ways in which religious movements are increasingly coming to shape the future of urbanism in Nigeria.

Urban studies has long viewed religion as something that happens in cities but not as a producer of urban space. This workshop examines the ways that faith-based movements are increasingly coming to take on a role formerly played by the state in shaping the infrastructures, residences, schools, economies, and cultural practices of urban life.

We will explore the changing role of faith-based organizations in the face of a declining welfare state and how prayer cities represent a distinct form of urbanism in which questions of sovereignty, infrastructure, the state, and spirituality are being redefined. We examine what this tells us about the nature of Africa’s cities, about religion, the state, new forms of sovereignty and daily life.
