IFRA Fellow's Research Training Seminar: The anthropological production of knowledge in the context of secrecy

Date : Tuesday, 23rd of May, 2017
Time : 10am – 1pm
Place : IFRA Library, Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan

IFRA is pleased to organise our next Research Training Seminar.

Exceptionally, this seminar will be run by our guest Dr. Dominique Somda, faculty member at the International Honours Programme, Brattleboro, Vermont.

A socio-anthropologist, Dr. Somda works on the anthropology of slavery,  Democracy, Christianity, feminist and post-colonial studies. She holds a PhD from the University of Paris-Nanterre and has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Reed University, and the London School of Economics.

The workshop aims to explore the anthropological production of knowledge in the context of secrecy. The participants will be invited to reflect on (and experiment with) concepts and methods to identify secrets worth studying — and how to analyse them ethically. Confirmed participants are required to read Michael Houseman's paper "The interactive basis of ritual effectiveness in a male initiation rite", available for download below, prior to the session.

Registration is compulsory and reserved to IFRA fellows. Interested fellows should send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. Since the available space is very limited (only 15 seats) and our workshop series has proven very popular so far, we strongly encourage you to register well before this date.
