Open to second year master's students, doctoral and postdoctoral students, as well as researchers working in humanities and social sciences on a country under IFRA-Nigeria's geographical mandate (Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, Chad and Togo). 1. Presentation of the call
This call is addressed to second-year Master’s students, doctoral and post-doctoral students, as well as researchers.
IFRA-Nigeria – the French Institute for Research in Africa located within the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan – has a regional vocation that extends over nine West African countries: Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, Chad and Togo. It promotes and supports research on these countries in the field of the humanities and social sciences. Disciplines outside this field are not eligible.
IFRA-Nigeria is financing, for the period of January 2027 to October 2027, a dozen of research projects, either individual or collective, implying fieldwork missions and/or stays in archives. IFRA-Nigeria grants can only reach a maximum of €1,000, depending on the nature and the budget of the project.
All applications for funding for the year 2027 must be sent before 30 October, 2026, 23:59 West African Time (see modalities and documents below). No nationality requirements apply. Sustainable partnerships with institutions and/or researchers in the host country are strongly encouraged.
The projects must be in line with the geographical area covered by IFRA-Nigeria and at least one of the four research axes of the Institute:
- Axis 1: Beliefs, bodies and health
- Axis 2: Citizenship, gender and mobilisation
- Axis 3: Heritage dynamics and environment
- Transversal axis: Digital Humanities
All projects must mention a valorisation component (publications, oral communications, etc.) in connection with IFRA-Nigeria’s editorial and research activities.

The response to the call will be sent to all applicants by email in December 2026 at the latest.
2. List of documents to be provided
- A cover letter (1 page maximum, font size = Arial 12, automatic margins and paragraph size).
- A CV (3 pages maximum).
- A budget mentioning the total cost of the project. Please note that the budget must include a detailed explanation of the intended use of funds requested from IFRA-Nigeria, and any other amount requested to or received from other sources of funding. Use the budget template downloadable from the provided link.
- A detailed description of the research project not exceeding 4 pages (bibliography and budget excluded). It should include the scientific project, a detailed work plan (dates, itinerary, objectives, etc.), the list of institutional partnerships, the perspectives of valorisation and a bibliography. Use the proposal template downloadable from the provided link.
The documents must be uploaded in a single pdf file in the Google form (see link below).
Kindly note that:
-In the case of an individual project, the proposed research must be undertaken personally by the applicant and not be carried out by anyone else.
- In the case of a collaborative project, all persons involved and their role must be identified and explained.
3. Scientific integrity
Scientific integrity is of the utmost importance not only in the research project, but also in the drafting of the research proposal. As such the proposal cannot be written by someone other than the applicant, nor can it use artificial intelligence (AI) tools without properly disclosing and justifying its usage.
You must read IFRA-Nigeria’s position on the use of artificial intelligence (also available on the “calls & grants” page of our website). Any infringement of the rules set out in this document will lead to the automatic disqualification of your candidacy, and could potentially exclude you from any future collaboration with IFRA-Nigeria.

If your application is successful, please note that only half of the grant will be paid at the start of the project, by January 2027. The second half will only be paid after a final report has been submitted. All reports must be sent before 15 November 2027.

1. Présentation de l’appel
Cet appel s'adresse aux étudiant·e·s de Master 2, aux doctorant·e·s, aux post-doctorant·e·s et aux chercheur·e·s en poste.
L’IFRA-Nigeria – Institut français de Recherche en Afrique, situé au sein de l’Institute of African Studies, à l’Université d’Ibadan – a un mandat scientifique s’étendant sur neuf pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest : Nigeria, Bénin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, Tchad et Togo. Il soutient les recherches en sciences humaines et sociales. Toutes les disciplines en dehors de ce champ ne sont pas éligibles à cet appel.
L’IFRA-Nigeria finance, sur la période de janvier à octobre 2027, une douzaine de projets de recherche, individuels ou collectifs, impliquant des missions de terrain ou séjours en archives. Les financements attribués sont de 1 000 € maximum, selon la nature et le budget du projet.
Toutes les demandes de financement pour l’année 2027 devront impérativement nous parvenir avant le 30 octobre 2026, 23h59 (WAT) (voir modalités et documents ci-dessous). Aucune condition de nationalité ne s’applique. Les partenariats avec des institutions et/ou des chercheur·e·s du pays qui accueille la recherche sont fortement encouragés.
Les projets de recherche doivent s’inscrire dans les pays ouest-africains relevant du mandat de l’IFRA-Nigeria et dans l’un des quatre axes de recherche de l’Institut.
- Axe 1 : Croyances, corps et santé
- Axe 2 : Citoyennetés, genre et mobilisations
- Axe 3 : Dynamiques de patrimonialisation et environnement
- Axe transversal : Humanités numériques

Veuillez noter que :
- Dans le cas d'un projet individuel, la recherche doit être menée personnellement par le·la candidat·e et ne peut être réalisée par une autre personne.
- Dans le cas d'un projet collaboratif, toutes les personnes impliquées et leur rôle doivent être identifiés et justifiés.
3. Intégrité scientifique
Respecter l’intégrité scientifique est de la plus haute importance, non seulement dans le cadre du projet de recherche, mais aussi dans la rédaction de la proposition de recherche. Par conséquent, votre candidature ne peut être rédigée par une tierce personne, et il est également interdit d’utiliser des outils d’intelligence artificielle (IA), sans clairement l’annoncer et le justifier.
Vous devez lire IFRA-Nigeria’s position on the use of artificial intelligence (également disponible sur la page « calls & grants » de notre site internet). Toute infraction aux règles détaillées dans ce document mènera à une disqualification automatique de votre candidature, et peut potentiellement vous interdire toute future collaboration avec l’IFRA-Nigeria.
